Like making things? Want to learn a new skill? Interested in meeting like-minded folks to collaborate with on new projects? Then you should totally become a member! Here are some of the benefits:
- 24/7 access to the shop and all the tools and resources therein. (There are other tenants in the building, so anything that would generate strong odors, or make a lot noise between Midnight and 8am are to be avoided.)

- Regular meetups and activities with likeminded people.
- Field trips to events such as Maker Faire, Dayton Hamvention, etc.
If you think you might be interested, feel free to come out to the space and meet everyone. The best time to do this is during a members meeting, or during a scheduled event, such as Friday open houses. If you would like to check out the space at another time, let us know (by email or twitter) and we can arrange to have someone show you around.
While we collect dues to pay our rent and other operating costs, HackPittsburgh would not be a success without the generous contribution of time and effort from our members. To reflect the value of our members’ efforts, HackPittsburgh’s membership system operates on a dues + volunteering based system. Our monthly requirements are:
HackPittsburgh needs all kinds of volunteer work, donated goods, etc. to be successful. Members can meet their monthly volunteering requirement by doing work around the shop, hosting events or classes, donating stuff that we need, etc. We used to keep track of each member’s hours each month via a Doodle poll, but have recently switched to using a section of the white-board in the shop. This makes it easier for folks in the shop to see what has been done, and what still needs to be done.
Members have a three month grace period in which to make up any month’s missed volunteer time/contribution. Failure to do so will result in revocation of a member’s good standing. If you have any questions about volunteer hours, would like to make a donation in place of volunteering time, need to make up hours, or are not sure how many hours you’ve volunteered, send email to email@example.com and coordinate with a board member.
How to Join:
In order to join, you must visit the shop first and meet with the HackPittsburgh Board. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or stop by the shop on a public night. Once approved, use this PayPal link for your initial payment:
How to Pay Dues:
Membership dues of $30 are due on the 1st of each month. There is grace period of 5 days to maintain membership in good standing. RFID access will be turned off for members not in good standing. All dues payments are nonrefundable.
