Attention amateur radio operators!  This Friday at 7pm, join us at HackPittsburgh and learn about the Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System (NBEMS). Harry Bloomberg, an Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator for the Western PA Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), will talk about ARES, how the services works for Western PA and his responsibilities there.

Harry will also give us a rundown and a demo of the Open Source NBEMS  package, which allows lists of data to be sent successfully over ham radio during an emergency.

As with all Friday events at HackPittsburgh, this NBEMS talk and demo with Harry Bloomberg is open to the public!  HackPittsburgh is located at 1936 5th Ave. in Pittsburgh, PA.  The entrance can be found around back on Watson Street, next to the big yellow garage door.  Doors open at 6pm, and Harry will take the stage at 7pm.  We hope to see you there!

HackPittsburgh member Derrick Brashear and guest speaker Alex Lang will explain communication signals, how they’ve developed over time, and how things look in person on the tracks.

They’ll also explain how the radio system works, walk through some free software that you can use to decode the signals, show off the hardware used to pick them up, and even give a live demo!

As with all HackPittsburgh Friday events, this talk is open to the public!  HackPittsburgh is located at 1936 5th Ave. in Pittsburgh, the entrance is by the garage around back on Watson St.  Doors open at 6pm, and the talk should begin around 7pm.  Hope to see you there!

The PCKIZ is a non-profit organization working to improve Pittsburgh’s commercial areas in the Hill District, Downtown, and Uptown (where HackPittsburgh is located!) through a combination of tax incentives, entrepreneurial resources, educational and internship programs, networking events, and technology showcases.

Bill will be speaking at HackPittsburgh this Friday at 7pm to give us the scoop on the PCKIZ, how their programs may benefit HackPittsburgh members and other Pittsburgh entrepreneurs, and how to get involved.

As with all Friday events at HackPittsburgh, this talk is open to the public.  If you’ve never been to HackPittsburgh before, we’re located at 1936 5th Ave in Pittsburgh’s Uptown district.  The entrance is next to the garage around the back of the building.

The US Pirate Party platform covers many topics of interest to HackPittsburgh members, including DRM and copyright online, privacy, freedom of speech and assembly, intellectual property reform, and more!

So, members, get down to the shop by 8pm, meet some representatives of the Pirate Party, and discuss the issues important to you!

For the unfamiliar, DeepLocal is behind cool media projects like the Nike LIVESTRONG Chalkbot, info awareness services like RouteShout, and providers of the excellent Gumband SMS API.

They’ll be dropping by HackPittsburgh to check out the shop, talk a bit about their company, their projects, the Gumbands API, and the joys of dealing with the bureaucracy around SMS.

Like all Friday events, this on is open to the public, so even if you’re not a member, feel free to come on down on Dec. 11th and meet some folks from DeepLocal!

On Friday, November 13th, at 7pm, ioBridge developer (and comedian) Hans Scharler will visit HackPittsburgh to give a demo of the ioBridge IO-204 I/O module, show off some of its capabilities, and answer questions about what you can do with it!

As a Friday event, this talk is open to the public, so bring your friends!
